How to Use an Eyeshadow Palette: A Simple Guide for Beginners
You bought a palette with twenty or thirty shades, opened it, used the same two browns every day, and quietly wondered what the rest were for. Almost everyone does this. Here is how to actually use a palette, explained simply, so you get your money's worth out of it.
First, understand what you are looking at
Most palettes are laid out in a pattern once you know what to look for.
Light shades go all over the lid or under the brow. They brighten and open up the eye.
Mid-tone browns and warm shades go in the crease. This is the shade that does most of the work and gives your eyes depth.
Dark shades go on the outer corner only. A little goes a very long way here.
Shimmers and glitters go on the centre of the lid, on top of everything else, right at the end.
That is the whole system. Light all over, mid-tone in the crease, dark in the outer corner, shimmer in the middle.
The three shade formula that always works
If you remember nothing else, remember this. Pick three shades from your palette:
- A light neutral, close to your skin tone
- A mid-tone brown
- One shimmer
Sweep the light shade over the whole lid. Blend the mid-tone brown into the crease with a fluffy brush, moving side to side. Pat the shimmer onto the centre of the lid with your finger.
Three shades, four minutes, and it works on every Pakistani skin tone. Once this feels easy, start swapping the mid-tone for warmer or deeper colours.
Why your eyeshadow looks patchy
Four reasons, in order of how often they are the culprit:
You are using the wrong brush. A flat brush packs colour on. A fluffy brush blends it out. You need both, and most patchiness comes from trying to blend with a flat brush. Our guide to brushes covers which ones matter.
You skipped the base. Eyeshadow grips better on a primed lid. Even a little concealer patted on and set with powder makes a visible difference.
Too much product at once. Tap excess off the brush first. It is far easier to build up than to remove.
Not enough blending. Most people stop blending about thirty seconds too early. Small circular motions where the two shades meet.

Shades that suit Pakistani skin
Warm tones almost always flatter more than cool ones. Bronze, copper, gold, terracotta and warm browns look rich on our skin tones. Deep plum and burgundy work beautifully for evening and wedding looks.
Be careful with very pale, frosty or silver shades. They can look ashy on medium to deep skin, especially in photos with flash.
If your palette has shades you never use, they are probably the cool-toned ones. That is normal, and it is not a fault in the palette.
How to make it last all day
- Prime the lid, or at least set concealer with powder before you start.
- Build in thin layers rather than one heavy application.
- Press shimmer on with a finger, not a brush. Fingers give far better payoff.
- Finish with a setting spray, especially in Pakistan's heat.
