DIY Lash Extensions at Home: How to Apply Cluster Lashes That Last a Week
Salon lash extensions look gorgeous, but they are expensive, take two hours, and need refills every few weeks. DIY cluster lashes give you a very similar result at home, for a fraction of the cost, and they last for days rather than a single evening. Here is exactly how to do them properly.
Cluster lashes vs strip lashes: what is the difference?
This is the bit that confuses most people, so let us be clear.
Strip lashes are one full band you stick along your lash line. You put them on in the morning and take them off at night. Easy, quick, and best for a single event.
Cluster lashes are small groups of 5 to 10 lashes that you apply a few at a time, directly onto your natural lashes. They look far more natural because there is no visible band, and with a proper bond and seal they stay on for 5 to 7 days. This is what salons use for extensions.
If you have only ever used strips, clusters are the upgrade. They take a little more patience the first time, then become quick.
What you need
A proper kit has three things, and skipping any of them is why home lashes fail:
- Cluster lashes in a few lengths, so you can build a natural shape
- Bond and seal — the bond holds, the seal locks them in and makes them waterproof
- An applicator tool — placing clusters with fingers is genuinely difficult

How to apply cluster lashes, step by step
- Start with clean, dry lashes. No mascara, no oil, no moisturiser near the lash line. Bond will not grip oily lashes.
- Curl your natural lashes first. A quick curl with an eyelash curler helps the clusters sit flush against your own lashes.
- Apply the bond to your natural lash line and let it get tacky. This waiting step is the single biggest difference between lashes that last a week and lashes that fall off by evening.
- Place clusters from underneath. Using the applicator, attach each cluster to the underside of your natural lashes, not onto the skin. Work from the outer corner inward.
- Build the shape. Longer clusters at the outer corner, shorter towards the inner corner. This is what makes it look natural rather than obviously fake.
- Seal them. Apply the seal over the base once everything is in place. This is what gives you the waterproof, multi-day hold.
Your first application might take 30 to 40 minutes. By the third time you will be doing it in 15.
How to make them last the full week
- Avoid water and steam for the first 24 hours while the bond fully cures.
- Do not use oil-based cleansers or makeup removers near your eyes. Oil dissolves the bond.
- Do not rub your eyes, and try not to sleep face-down.
- Brush them gently with a clean spoolie each morning to keep the shape.
- Skip mascara on them. Good clusters do not need it, and mascara shortens their life considerably.
How to remove them safely
Never pull cluster lashes off dry. That takes your natural lashes with them, and repeated damage causes real thinning.
Use the remover that comes with your kit, or soak a cotton pad in warm water and hold it gently against the lash line for a minute to soften the bond. They should slide off with almost no resistance. If they resist, soak longer rather than pulling harder.
